DRAFT Minutes of

Annual General Meeting held 12 April 2011

Grange Rochester Hotel, Vincent Sq., London SW1
Minutes of 2010 AGM and matters arising

The minutes of the 2010 AGM were adopted as a true record.

  • St. Stephen’s Church, Rochester Row
The Rev. Philip Walsh explained the background to the organ appeal of St. Stephen’s church. The organ was beyond repair but a second-hand replacement had been found that would allow the church to be an organ recital, teaching and practice venue. The AGM agreed that the VSRA donate 500 to the appeal.

  • Chairman’s report on 2010
The Chairman’s report on 2010, the bicentenary year of Vincent Square, was received. He thanked all who had played a part in making it a success. The Chairman said that not all ideas to improve the Square had been realised during the year and encouraged the VSRA to keep them in view for its future programme of action. The bicentenary appeal would be kept open for a while longer in case other members wished to contribute towards the cost of the plaque of Dean William Vincent.
  • Treasurer’s report, adoption of 2010 accounts and 2011 fees
The Treasurer, Jonathan Cole, presented the 2010 accounts, which were adopted. An excess of expenditure over income of 5,628 reduced the assets of the VSRA to 5,676 at the end of 2010, due mainly to costs associated with the bicentenary celebrations. Excluding tennis subscriptions, membership income trebled to 1,865 in 2010 compared to 2009. It was agreed that household membership fees should remain at 20 for 2011. Jonathan was thanked for his stewardship of the VSRA’s finances.
  • Tennis Section
The Secretary of the Tennis Section, Mary Maxwell, reported that 34 members had joined the tennis section in 2010. As a result of this and the higher fees levied for the greater hours of access to the courts, the charges paid to Westminster School were almost covered so that the tennis section’s deficit of 1,500 in 2009 had reduced significantly to 359 in 2010. The previous year’s decision by the AGM to admit corporate tennis membership had not caused any problems. Mary was thanked for her stewardship of the Tennis Section.
  • Westminster City Council update
Cllr. Danny Chalkley spoke of the extreme financial pressures now being felt by WCC. Council services were being pared back to the essentials. Nonetheless, the Ward Budget of 46,000 was being maintained; its focus in 2011 would be on providing services valued by the community. He said that ideas for how the Ward Budget might be spent would be welcomed by the councillors.

  • Election of Executive Committee
Having served for almost a decade, the Chairman announced that he would not be standing for re-election and sought nominations. In the absence of candidates, he agreed to act until the Summer Party; meanwhile, he would sound out members on his replacement. The following members were (re-)elected:
Jonathan Cole (Treasurer)  Anthony Taylor (History & Heritage)
Mary Maxwell (Tennis Section) Malcolm Neate
Thanks were recorded for their work and also to Felicity Bullock for keeping the VSRA website functioning as a key means of communication and archive. Felicity mentioned that while willing to continue with this role, if there was someone (perhaps with greater expertise) who was keen to take it over, she would be willing to pass it on.
  • Any other business
The meeting closed with thanks to Mr Matharu and the staff of Grange Rochester Hotel for their generous hospitality

Stephen McClelland,
Acting VSRA Chairman
